With its distinctive white head and colorful yellow beak, the bald eagle is one of the most easily recognized raptors. Exclusive to North America, this noble bird has come to represent so many of the principles Americans hold dear. Its reverence, however, dates back well beyond the formation of the United States. For thousands of years, Native American Indian tribes have considered the eagle to be sacred, including them in dances, religious ceremonies, and using their striking feathers as awards for bravery. In the interest of the eagles’ protection, their feathers can no longer be legally possessed by any person without a special permit from the United States or Canada, but their images portrayed in art and photographs allow us to share in this same spirit of honor.
